ASHCA Works with University of
Alabama to Develop a New Certificate Program

David Fleenor, President of ASHCA, has been working with the University of Alabama Continuing Studies Development to develop a Patient Advocacy Certificate Program.  It is one of the two programs of its kind in the United States.

Courses emphasize the knowledge, research, and practical skills needed to effectively advocate for the personalized and comprehensive care of patients in the increasingly complex world of health systems.

Experienced professionals teach courses from a variety of fields including Medicine, Social Work, Healthcare Consumer Advocacy, Nursing and Risk Management.  Participants have opportunities to network in an interdisciplinary atmosphere with leaders from the southeastern region of the U.S.

The program is designed not only for professional Patient Advocates, but also for any professional or volunteer that views patient advocacy as a vital part of his/her role in care giving or providing services.  The program looks broadly at the social, business, cultural, and legislative issues related to Patient Advocacy.

To complete the certificate, participants must attend 10 workshops for a total of 60 contact hours within a four-year period.  No sequencing of classes is necessary.
