We are proud announce the winner of the Ann Barrett Patient Advocacy Excellence Award for 2006:
Janet Pakish
Porter Memorial Hospital
Ann Barrett, for whom this award was named, was born on August 10, 1940 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Ann was married to William Barrett for over 30 years and they had a daughter named Amber. Ann loved birds, annual vacations to Mexico and she was an avid recycler.
Ann had a Master's Degree in Social Work and worked for over 24 years in the VA system. The last six years of her life were spent as a patient advocate at the VA in Indianapolis. Ann felt honored to help the veterans that she served. In other words, Ann epitomized the qualities of a patient advocate. Ann left this world a better place in July of 2004 and she will long be remembered.
Ann symbolized many elements of patient advocacy: caring, thoughtful, sincere, investigative, passionate and professional. Ann's work as a patient advocate, member of her church, community outreach programs, and volunteer at local museums made her a unique, caring and phenomenal person.
