Every patient that enters the hospital has a unique set of needs—clinical symptoms that require medical attention and issues specific to the individual that can affect his or her care. As patients move along the care continuum, it is important for hospitals to be prepared to identify and address not just the clinical aspects of care, but also the spectrum of each patient’s demographic and personal characteristics.
Join SHCA for a webinar to ensure your hospital has the latest information on the Joint Commission’s newly revised hospital accreditation standards to improve patient-provider communication. In addition, you will learn about a free resource, Advancing Effective Communication, Cultural Competence, and Patient- and Family-centered Care: A Roadmap for Hospitals.
In this 90-minute webinar, Dr Christina Cordero, will examine rules and best practices of the standards. She will provide insight and answer your questions on:
- Identifying and addressing patient communication needs
- Providing language services for LEP or deaf or hard of hearing, including addressing qualifications for language interpreters and translators
- Collecting race, ethnicity and language data
- Patient access to chosen support individual
- Non-discrimination in patient care
By the end of the webinar participants will be able to:
- Identify communication as an essential component of patient safety and quality care
- List key areas addressed by the new patient-centered communication standards
- Use available tools and resources to improve your organization’s ability to meet unique patient needs
The standards were developed as part of an initiative supported by The Commonwealth Fund to increase quality and safety through effective communication, cultural competence, and patient- and family-centered care. The roadmap was developed in collaboration with the National Health Law Program.

This "roadmap" was designed to help hospitals advance effective communication, cultural competence, and patient- and family-centered care. The document includes a checklist hospitals can use to catalog their efforts along the continuum of care, as well as practice examples and appendices on relevant Joint Commission standards and other laws and regulations. It encourages hospitals to use the guide "as a foundation for creating processes, policies and programs that are best suited for their organizations," noting that there is no "one size fits all" approach to these issues.
To aid in the development of the profession, SHCA has identified 9 Domains of Practice as being key skills and knowledge for advanced competency in the role of a patient and consumer advocate.
This webinar addresses several of those domains including: interpersonal communication and customer service/service excellence.
