Sheila Brune  will share her story of how she became an advocate for patients and families. She will express the importance of honesty when bad things happen in healthcare. She will also describe the impact of simply saying “I’m Sorry” to patients and families and demonstrate how compassion and sincerity can facilitate an amicable relationship and financial impact when managing the aftermath of sentinel events.

Sherry Worsham, a graduate student at Harvard Extension School, will share the results of her research that examined medical error incidents from the perspective of the family members of the injured and offer her the findings in further discussion.

By the end of the presentation participants will be able to:

  • Identify symptoms of trauma experienced by family members following an unplanned adverse health event involving a loved one
  • Recognize common disclosure strategies put into practice by healthcare professionals
  • Outline the research findings that indicate that family members’ symptoms of trauma are reduced when healthcare professionals adequately disclose after the medical error injury of a loved one
