The philosophy of patient representation and patient advocacy has not changed over the years, although its practice has grown more sophisticated. 

Participant in this module to hear a guided review of the essentials of the patient advocate’s role in the organizational setting and how they contribute to a positive healthcare experience for patients, families, and the community.

Module Content:

  • Overview of the Profession and Its Evolution
  • Understanding the Patient Experience
  • Legislation and Regulations Pertaining to Patient Rights
  • Legal Issues and Ethical Decision Making


By the end of this unit of study learners should be able to:

  • Articulate the role of the healthcare consumer advocate in an organizational setting.
  • Determine what factors constitute the “patient experience.”
  • List the critical elements of effective policies and procedures for institutional adherence to a Patient Rights document.
  • Define key legislation and regulations as they relate to patient rights.
  • Analyze the advocate’s critical responsibilities given legislative and regulatory guidelines.
  • Articulate the basic philosophical principles regarding medical ethics as they pertain to patient rights. 
  • Determine what an advocate’s ethical responsibilities are when a patient’s best interests appear to place the healthcare setting at risk.
  • Define what constitutes ethical decision-making related to the continuation of completion of treatment particular to the end of life, informed consent, and confidentiality
